AI in Action: NZ’s AI Productivity Surge

We looked at the third bi-annual AI in Action report from AI Forum NZ (August 2025) and here’s what we’re seeing: AI is firmly moving from “nice to have” to “making a real difference” in New Zealand organisations.

Big Ideas

  • Productivity gains are widespread. Most businesses report efficiency improvements as a result of using AI.
  • Costs for adopting and maintaining AI are dropping. Initial and ongoing investments required are declining significantly, making it easier for smaller and mid-sized organisations to jump on board.
  • Positive financial impact is growing. More companies are seeing bottom-line benefits — not just cost savings, but improved revenue or other gains.
  • Workforce effects are complex. There are signs of both job creation (new roles) and reduction in hiring in some areas; some respondents are attributing job losses to AI (but it’s still a smaller share).
  • Perception & trust vary, especially among different groups. For example, Māori are more likely to see risks or have concerns; many New Zealanders believe the benefits of AI outweigh risks — but that belief isn’t uniform.

If AI adoption is becoming cheaper and delivering productivity gains, how might smaller NZ businesses or organisations with tight budgets seizing this moment? Could targeted support or sharing best practice accelerate inclusive benefits across regions and communities?
